May 2011
Welcome my friends, to May’s Journey of Plein Air 365â„¢ 2011,
May was the busiest month that I have had in a long time. Our son, C.J., graduated from high school – what a mile marker! Since we were going to have family in town, and have small party on the patio, we decided it was a good time remove two huge trees that were dying. Nothing like a personal deadline to get stuff like that done! Along with that came some yardwork, so it put me a few weeks behind schedule. But now, I am back on track, and boy does it feel good.
May was another month full of painting challenges due to weather. Once again, like in April, we had high winds, snow, and even 3 inches of hail. But not even the hail could stop the painting.
Beside the weather challenges, May was a fun month to paint. I had the chance to paint a scene from my son’s high school graduation party, as well as the beginning of the lilac and poppy season. I love to paint lilacs and poppies. I find lilacs can be painted as complex as the flowers are, and they can also be as simple as a few brush strokes. The variety of colors that they can be can also be a challenge to match. Then we get to the poppies. Not only can they look as thin as paper, but they also have a wonderful transparent look to them that makes them glow. Yet, at the same time, you can tell that the poppies have a unique volume to them. To try and capture that soft, yet bold, color is another wonderful challenge that my Plein Air 365â„¢ project has brought me.
I hope you enjoy May’s journey as much as I enjoyed painting it. Until next month, may love fill your heart, and may art fill your life.
