October 2012
Welcome, my friends, to October’s journey of Plein Air 365â„¢,
That means fall is now in full force, and there was another month of incredible places to see and paint. For me, it was also a month of highs and lows. Well not too low, I guess. I spent a week painting while having the flu, and trying to paint while on cold medicine was quite an unusual experience. Other than that, it was one of the best Octobers that I have seen in a long time.
This month, I had the chance to paint in Colorado Springs’ Garden of The Gods, and even in Pueblo. I love the diverse scenes that our great state offers a painter. It has everything from prairies to peaks and desert to snow, it’s fantastic!
October also brought Halloween, and since I like to paint something special for the holidays, I figured I would do a plein air still-life of something that I thought was kind of appropriate for the day. It was a real human skull. Painting a real skull (a friend received this in a roundabout way and gave it to me as a gift), and not a plastic replica, gives you a little different way of thinking about your subject. Not only how to paint it, but more so, who was this person, how was this person’s life, and can I give respect to this object that was once a person? To do this on all-hollows-eve was a special moment for me.
Once again, there is so much more that I could tell you about, all the great things that I saw and had the good fortune to paint, but I’ll leave that to the book. For now, please sit back and enjoy October’s journey.
Best Wishes,
Ted
